Hello.....I just moved into a house that has radiant ceiling heat and I know very little about it.....my question is, after doing some online research, how can I safely mount things IN the ceiling like...a plug-in style ceiling fan, hanging lamps that require screw in ceiling hooks, etc. without damaging the wires or coils? Thanks to anyone who can help me with this!
There are two basic types, cable radiant heat installed between double thick drywall sheets by hand when the home was built (usually in older homes) and manufactured drywall panels with heat strips in bedded in them (70's and 80's). Cable systems were usually along the whole ceiling. Newer systems were one, two or three 4x8 sheets per room along the outside walls in warmer climates or more in cold climates. Their location can be identified by thermal imaging. Some home inspection companies can identify their location or if you are lucky enough to know who wired the house you could call them. Either way you need to be carefull, if nicked or cut you will lose heat in that room.
