Question regarding HeatPump wiring

I have a Goodman heat pump and I'm trying to understand what the point of the white wire is on the heat pump.

I know the Blue (B) is common.
The Yellow (Y) is the main On/Off for the compressor/fan
The Orange (O) is the reversing valve
The Red (R) is the 24v supply
What is the White (W)?

I have a vision pro 8000 and it has it's own outdoor thermostat. I have my two stage furnace wired up as single stage with W1 and W2 wired together on the furnace and the AUX/E wired up on the thermostat. I currently have the white wire on the HP going to the W1 and W2 on the furnace.. Is this right?

Can someone help me understand what the HP does with the W wire?

Question regarding HeatPump wiring

W get's energized when the HP enters a defrost cycle. That will call for fossil heat from the AH during the time the HP is thawing itself out. (it enters A/C mode during defrost)

Personally I didn't even bother hooking it up. A few minutes of cool air during defrost isn't that big a deal but you'll get more comfort hooking it up.

That's a very good point. Color alone should not dictate any wiring decisions. The wiring should be confirmed by physical inspection at the appropriate terminals.
