question on old thermostat wiring for upgrade
I bought a Honeywell RTH7600 thermostat to replace an old round Honeywell model. I'm stumped with the wiring. There is one red wire and one black wire attached to the old thermostat.
What is really confusing me is that the wires come in and go back out, each wire has an inch of insolation removed and loops around the contact screw, then goes back into the wall. It's not extra wire I tried pulling both ends.
I know the red wire is the power, and the black is for the heat (white wire for honeywell)
How do I connect the old wiring?
Do I make jumpers off the exposed part of the wires?
Why would the wiring go back into the wall?
thanks for any help!
That is strange. Do you have a boiler, hot water or steam heat with radiators?
we have a gas boiler, with I think hot water pipes for heat.
I live in a brownstone with 4 units, I'll find out tomorrow what the heat system is for sure.
