Question

question! about my attic vent situation!

My home is a 125 feet long including the garage.I have a ridge vent and soffet vents, not a lot of them. Heres what i'm doing, or trying to do. In my garage the roof studs are not covered .but the end of the house above has a screened door 2 foot x 2 foot approx;you open this door to go into the attic on your hands an knees for another 100' or so. I am thinking i should put up a fan thermostatically controlled in front of that screened door into the attic.set it to come on and go off at the high temp days its been 95 a lot here [lower mich]

I am not planning a big operation here, unless it calls for it. btw i have 3' overhangs on my house. I am wondering and planning to set up a GOOD house fan and mounting a control on the wall down below.
Will someone here share with me the pros and cons as i read here pulling air back thru the ridge vent is not a good idea. I just want pull a little air slowly out of this hot box attic...so as my air condioner isn't running so often .anything at all i appreciatetive thanks for looking please someone talk to me on this bob s

I'd be tempted to put in more soffit vents. I thought the idea was to have more incoming air than exiting air. If you pull air from the attic and there is not enough vents to allow incoming, you'll be pulling air from inside the house.

How about adding more sofit vents to get better air flow to the ridge vents.

I was thinking that the open screen door in the attic,up in the peek inside the garage. ..i could pull air out from there and bring the air down to the automobile level and out the back garage window. [I have huge widows all thru my house] Baically "better circulation"but i was told it would bring air in revese..into the attic thru the ridge vent/Not a good thing to do.If you are circulating "hot air" i don't think it matters which way you get it in because Iam sending it out my back window. I used to blow air out one widow wiyh a houde fan in a two story house so my 3 boys would kool down good by morning. Worked like a champ then.any comments welcome bob s

I'm not sure why you are trying to make something work differently than what millions of other homes use and works well.

Is there any reason why you will not do more soffit vents? I'd much rather have a passive solution than rely on a mechanical one ( read $$$ and reliability issues).

Just to reenforce what a couple of other posters have suggested, attic fans area a huge boondoggle. They seem great at first glance, but depressurizing an attic can draw air out of the living space through any leak between them. Pressurizing the attic, just as bad. Resist the temptation to install them and improve the passive ventilation.

If you live in a hot-humid climate, you have ducts in your attic, your existing insulation and sealing between living and attic space is poor, consider sealing the attic and spray foam insulating the roof deck.
