Question about mini-split heat pump using R-410a
Do all mini-splits (A/C and Heat Pump) have the expansion valve in the outdoor unit? My Friedrich MR18Y3F does, and I wonder why. It makes it impossible to check sub-cooling to verify a proper refrigerant charge. It also makes the small line to the indoor unit a heat absorber before you want to absorb any heat (while in cooling mode). It just seems like a bad idea to someone like me with limited understanding of these things.
Is there another way to check the refrigerant charge on these mini-splits? Please tell me they don't expect you to evacuate and do a complete re-charge whenever you suspect the charge might be low.
