Question about gas boiler shutoff

Just a question to fill my curiosity...

When you shut off a gas boiler via the emergency shutoff at the top of the stairs, what stops gas from just pouring into your house? Does the lack of electricity cause the valve on the gas line to close?

Question about gas boiler shutoff

Most modern gas valves require 24 volts to open them. So when you turn that switch off. The transformer is de-energized, and can't provide voltage to open the gas valve.

Question about gas boiler shutoff

Unless it is an old millivolt/self powered gas burner. Post a pic of the boiler and burner and make and model #.
