Question about floor register air supply

My home contains all 4" duct leading to every register in the house. Those registers are all the old upright kind (which I'm replacing), and they're connected to angled boots below. Not knowing anything about today's standard sizes, I went to Lowes to look for new boots and floor registers, and discovered that there are no 4" angled boots. There's plenty of 6's, but no 4's.

Now, I noticed there were plenty of 6"-4" reducers, so therein lies my question. Will going from a 4" duct to a reducer (expander, in this case) to a 6" angled boot reduce the volume of air coming out of the register, and if I do this house-wide, does that affect the heating performance in my home?

It won't affect the volume but it will reduce the velocity of the air coming out of the register. May not throw the air as far into the room and you may feel cold spots in some cases, 50/50 chance.

Question about floor register air supply

"Velocity" was actually the word I was wanting. Thanks.

I definitely don't want to introduce cold spots in my house where there weren't any previously. I mean, it looks like I don't have much of a choice, but if there's any way around it, I'd love to know.

Try find a wholesaler who sells sheet metal goods/fittings to the residential HVAC industry.
