Purchasing a used condenser...

I had my furnace replaced last fall. I just installed a new Carrier 3-1/2 ton cased coil. All I need now is the lineset and 3 ton condenser to finish the job.

I saw a used Carrier Infinity 3 ton condenser on EBay for $699. It's 5-1/2 years old. The owner says:
I presently have the Infinity system including the Infinity controller. A new condenser is out of the picture for now due to the cost.

QUESTION: Would you take the chance on a used condenser or sweat it out for the summer?

BTW: the seller has a 100% positive feedback on 264 ratings.

I'd pass, and what do you do when it fails, no warrenty, your out of luck.
It's almost 1/2 as old as a unit is expected to last.

Not at that price. Shipping and installation will be expensive and even though the seller says the parts warranty has another 4.5 years that's at the original installed location.

Ditto on the pass. If it were a few hundred, and you could go pick it up then that's different. As it stands, you'll have over $1,000 in it with purchase and shipping - and then you've got to find someone to install a used condenser (which would cost several hundred more dollars in my area). So you'd be very close to $2,000 ... for a used condenser with no warranty.

Don't buy someone else's used equipment it's not worth it . Sweat it out or try to buy a new one on payments.

if you have 600.00 to spend now...buy a window unit till you get enough to buy central ..then sell window unit to recoup some cost

Kinda did that. I bought a portable 12K BTU. It does a so-so job keeping the bedroom cooler but when it's really hot, like it is now - 91 at 11PM, the bedroom is at 84 so we still need fans to sleep.

I guess I picked a bad year to piecemeal a new HVAC system.

12,000 and it's barly keeping up, somethings wrong or that's one big room.
I had a 20,000 btu that heated and cooled an 800 sq. ft. house.

It's a bedroom-bathroom combo with vaulted ceilings and 3 skylights. All total it's about 500 sq/ft. If we close off the bathroom, the unit works pretty well but the bathroom turns into an oven. It has a 44x44 skylight in it and I think that adds a lot to the heat when the sun is beating down on it.

I have heard the portable units don't cool as well as window units. There's one large hose that acts as intake and output both and there's no condensate drain. Somehow the unit evaporates the condensate.

you would have been better off to get a window unit....portable as you said so so.....sleep with it beside your bed....

That little portable wouldn't be a drop in the ocean and any cooling pulled from the room would be diluted to nothing when it got recirculated back into the house

We have casement windows but in the MBdrm there's only a patio door and two skylights. I was thinking I'd rig up a large hose to have the portable pump air under the covers at night.

When I scrap the old condenser maybe I'll find gold instead of copper then I can buy a new house.
