propane wall heater pilot won't light

I have a simple propane wall heater and there is no gas flowing at the pilot tube. There is definitely gas flowing to the valve assembly. When I press the pilot button no gas flows. I have disconnected the pilot tube and checked for gas coming out of the body. there is no gas coming out of the body when the pilot knob is depressed in the pilot position. Any thoughts or suggestions?
