Problem with gas cock on furnace

Update. I called a gas guy and he told me that it sounded like I had to much pressure in the line for it to be doing that. He asked what color of regulator I have on the tank and I said the guy gave me a red one. He said that its the wrong regulator and I should have a grey one. So now I hope I didnt screw up my valve on the furnace. He said it should be ok once I get the correct regulator.

If moe then 1/2PSIG(14 inches of water column) was applied to the valve, its done for.

For something that seemed so simple sure turned into a headache. I will try the correct regulator and soap the valve to see if it leaks.... if its hooped I will just get it done up by a pro.

The problem with a valve that's been overgassed is not just gas leaking through the seals so you smell it.. It's that the valve can be internally damaged and later over overgas your heater. I've seen it happen.

The damage is not always detectable or immediately noticeable until the results reveal themselves as a health issue to yourself or the furnace.

Do you really want to be living in a small space with this potential?

I love the DIY attitude but this is one best left to a pro to check out the exchanger( to see if the valve change is worth the investment) and to change the valve.

Well another update... I had a gas guy come out to check out the valve on the furnace. I installed the correct regulator... And it was the one I wanted in the first place..... Anyways he says that these style of valves can take a lot more pressure than reccomended and still work fine. We fired the furnace up and everything is working fine. He had his gauges and all on it and everything checked out ok.

Ignorance is bliss and the tech is not the one that will die in the fire. Most people don't survive trailer fires either.

People are under the impression that if something has malfunctioned once and now it works OK is false.
If it fails once it will fail again and when you lease expect it, IE; Holidays , Weekends, Parties, While your away, When your broke, whatever.

Like stuck compressors once they stick throw them out because they will stick again, guaranteed.

Here in MO and back in Illinois the LP provider did ALL the conversions for heaters and appliances. That's their job. They hae the qualifications to do it properly and the resources.
