Preferred vent cap

I'll be installing a range hood this week. It has an 8" vent for ducting the be installed. I can go out the wall (hardie siding) or through my roof. Is one better over the other? If not, I was considering the roof because it would face the front of our house and I'm thinking a big vent would be unsightly on the siding.

If roof, is the broan vent caps that sit on the roof okay to use here in Iowa? Just thinking about the potential for snow, etc.
