Is it possible to change the direction the plenum goes?

Am helping a friend renovate his basement, and we want to move the plenum over against the wall instead of having it run down the center. The plenum currently runs west from the furnace a few feet and then turns and goes north; we were hoping to run it straight north from the furnace instead. I see that the piece of duct immediately on top of the furnace that houses the a/c coil has a slight curve built into it near the top, to help direct air flow into the plenum. Is it possible to re-work this so as to have a new curve going north where we can re-attach the plenum, or is that not really recommended? Is it then neccessary to have a gas-fitter come in to rotate the furnace so that the whole thing points north? Any help with this is appreciated, thanks.

I'd want to see the duct work before I even made a comment. You set up is already complicated enough with that extreme North turn. That takes some careful design work to make sure it will flow properly the way it is now.

Buy adding additional ducts you are going to increase the resistance to air flow which will affect how warm or cool your house will be.

Yep. Pretty much need a drawing with lengths on it. And as above. By adding turns and additional length to the duct. You also increase the size of the duct you need to run, to get the same amount of air flow.

Left, right, north, south. East, west, up, down. Means nothing. Without pictures. Which may help. Am I. Right.?.
