Portable A/C unit + Swinging Window

Hi all,

I am trying to see how I would go about using a portable A/C unit in a room with a window that swings out horizontally to open (opposed to one that slides up). I have a couple ideas on how to tackle this:

1. Remove one of the panes of glass in the window and fabricate a piece of plywood with a hole in it (for the venting hose) to take its place.

2. Same as the idea above, except, make one for the entire window. This one could be removed and would leave the window intact for winter.

If anyone has some ideas about how I should do this I am open to suggestions and would appreciate them.

Thanks!

I just installed a portable AC in my apartment and ran into a similar problem. I put a piece of Plexiglas over the window to cover all but the bottom 4". I screwed the Plexiglas into the window frame to hold it, and used the portable AC mounting for standard windows along the bottom 4". I've used duct tape to seal the cracks because I was in a hurry and summer only lasts about 1 month here so I wasn't interested in getting fancy with it. I first called a local home building supply place to get the Plexiglas and they quoted me almost $50 for a huge sheet that I would have to cut myself (and waste about 2/3rds of it). Someone gave me a tip of trying a local acrylic supply place and I ended up getting them to cut me a perfectly sized sheet for $23.

You can see a photo of it at http://www.diychatroom.com/album.php...&pictureid=422 In case that link doesn't work, you should be able to find it in the forum photo album under the title "Transom Window with portable AC installed"
