Please answer this question about my Carrier Heat Pump...

Hi everyone! So glad I found this forum since I know close to nothing about HVAC systems...

I hope someone can tell me if this is normal for my Carrier Performance Series High Efficiency Heat Pump. We own a vacation home and arrived to find the unit not working. Come to find out, we were out of propane (this is a dual-fuel unit). Once the propane was refilled, the unit started working just fine. My question is this: shouldn't the heat pump have worked by itself without the propane as it was only about 50 degrees outside? Or is there some kind of safety-override that won't allow it to operate without propane?

I'm very confused about the "auxiliary heat" mode. My understanding is that the heat pump works until it gets down to about 30 degrees outside; then it calls on the auxiliary system which is the propane. Am I even close to being correct?

Thanks.

Yes, if it is a duel fuel setup.

Its possible the outdoor tstat is set wrong or not working, causing the unit to run on AUX fuel only.
It is also possible that the indoor tstat was set to AUX mode only, or is miswired.

Might be miswired.

Might not be setup right at the stat.

Thanks! I don't believe the indoor thermostat is set for AUX only because once the propane tank was refilled, it started operating normally and the thermostat read "ACTUAL" as opposed to "AUX".

Is it possible that there's some kind of "safety override" -- i.e. the heat pump won't operate if the propane tank is empty? Or should the heat pump still work all by itself above 30-35 degrees?

That would depend on how its set up.
It may be set up, that once the indoor temp drops 2 or 3 below set temp. It doesn't matter what teh outdoor temp is. Only the aux heat works.

In that case. Its not set up to work off outdoor temp.
