That explains it. Our customers replaced those standing pilots 20 years ago. When I get a call like the OP it's a 25-40 year old furnace that hasn't been touched in a decade or two. I could count on one hand the number of them in the last 10 years that passed a heat exchanger inspection. Usually a rust hole right over the pilot.
