pilot wont stay lite


yep 99 out of 100 is really high...in my 40 yrs of business on standing pilot furnaces we may have found 25-30 and we checked and serviced alot more than 100 furnaces...ben sr

Marty's not saying 99/100 furnaces have cracked heat exchangers, he's saying 99/100 exhibiting the symptom he described have cracked heat exchangers.

That explains it. Our customers replaced those standing pilots 20 years ago. When I get a call like the OP it's a 25-40 year old furnace that hasn't been touched in a decade or two. I could count on one hand the number of them in the last 10 years that passed a heat exchanger inspection. Usually a rust hole right over the pilot.
