pilot light not staying lit

old gas furnace:
the pilot light will stay lit for awhile, even a couple days, and then go out for no reason. tonight we went down, re-lit it, turned on the heat and 30 min. later it blew out (heat was running almost continually during this time).

Also, should the blower stay on even if the pilot light isn't lit?

The thermocouple may be a bit loose where it connects at the gas valve. Could also be a crack in the heat exchanger blowing the pilot out.

yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking. We're on home warranty until Nov. 2008 so the assessor is coming out today. It better get fixed soon, it's real hard to get out of bed in the morning when the house is so cold!

Hi jkrodger

I am going to agree with a probable cracked heat exchanger. Have a HVAC company inspect it while its under warranty. The best way to find out it to have them test it with a chemical called heat exchanger analyzer.

Good luck

They replaced the thermal couple today and it appears to be helping. They said if it starts acting up again then it might be the external blower taking out the pilot light. If it acts up again they mentioned putting in a relighting kit.

If they are talking about the furnace blower putting the pilot out I would have the heat exchanger checked for sure. Your gas company will usually come out and check for carbon monoxide leaks for free. Don't trust yours or your family's to an appraiser, if that is who is telling you that.

thanks, they actually didn't send out an assessor but a repair man yesterday. He looked at the furnace for awhile after replacing the thermal couple and found that pretty much everything inside of the furnace has been replaced within the last couple years. We did specifically ask about the heat exchanger, since we'll need to hold off on other projects if we need to replace the furnace, and they said it looked fine.

We also have a carbon monoxide detector right above our furnace which is plugged in and has been checked (and just to be sure, we changed the back-up batteries in it last month). The furnace held the set temp. all night so we're pretty happy so far.
