Pilot doesn't stay lit

i have an old WIlliams Wall Heater.

I push the brown BUTTON when its in the PILOT position and light the pilot. I hear the gas flowing from the pilot thing and put my light near by - the pilot lights. When I then try to rotate the BUTTON to the
ON position, the pilot light goes out. I tried keeping the flame on in PILOT position for an extended period in case the heating element needed a long time to warm up -- still no luck. Please keep in mind the the Thermostat is in the maximum heat position (90+).

Any suggestions? is there a part I can replace myself? should i leav it to a pro? how much would it cost to fix?

thanks in advance. larry
