Question

Persistant buzz thermostat off

We have a Trane gas furnace about 10 years old. There is a persistant buzz coming from the louvered compartment even when the thermostat is in the off position. There is a master switch located adjacent to the furnace that cuts the power and causes the buzz to stop. I recall the unit was formerly quiet during past inspections and under identical circumstances: thermostat off, power on. I suspect I may need to change something out. Suggested troubleshooting? Am an engineering type, but thought to ask first. Thanks.

With a helper at the distant end of an empty garden hose, use your end as a stethoscope to find out which thing is buzzing.

cant find the location of the noise for you over the internet. We can only guess. You will need to locate the noise yourself or call in someone to find it for you. We cant tell you if the noise should be there or not until you find the source. The source is most likely the transformer as Beenthere pointed out.

A transformer or relay is the likely cause, as others have pointed out, if it happens when your thermostat is off.
Your longest screwdriver with the handle against the ear works pretty well as a stethoscope if your not sure which component is the source.

PS ..no insult intended but as a cautionary note....
I've found that my clients that are engineers are often the folks that know just enough to mess up themselves or there own furnaces.

Unlike many of my kind, I collect the best information from experienced minds first. I'm also very careful because I cannot afford mistakes and have lots of responsibility. Thank you for this time.
