Payne Heat Pump Traouble

I have a 4 ton Payne heat pump. The problem I am having is the a/c be running and blowing cold, then it will switch and start blowing hot air out of the vents. The outside units appears to be going into defrost mode. I have changed the thermostat thinking it was bad. That did not solve the problem. I will turn everything off for a while then back on and the a/c will work for a while. Any suggestions on where to start.

Sounds like symptoms of a reversing valve going bad. My advice is to call an HVAC tech to check your system.

Try this:
turn off power to the a/c condenser
pull the cover off the side of the unit with the electrical connections
what color wires are where on the low voltage side? (ie red goes to R brown goes to C)
or, take a picture and post it. We'll go from there.

You may also have a bad controller board, defective defrost switch, or damaged LV wiring.

When it switches to defrost mode, what does it do exactly?

When the system starts blowing heat out of the vents the outside unit fan stops running. I may be wrong on the unit going into defrost mode. Would the condenser fan casuse this issue.

THANKS

You can still hear the compressor running after the fan stops turning?

Probably a bad defrost sensor.

Disconnect the defrost sensor. And see if that stops it.

Yes, the compressor still runs after the fan shuts off. The inside unit is still running but blowing hot air. The air temperature from the vents is around 100-110 degrees. When the a/c is working the air temperature is around 60 - 65 degrees.

Follow the instructions in post 7. And you'll find out in a little while if its your defrost board, or your defrost sensor.

Of course you know where the defrost sensor hooks into the board, right?

Thanks for the help. I replaced the defrost board. Everything was working fine for a few hours then the compressor shuts off, but the condenser fan was still running. Now the air blowing out of the vents was only 90-95 degrees. I reset all the breakers and restarted the system. The compressor is now running. Any suggestions on what could be causing this.

Thanks

Are you sure you didn't miswire the board. And have the compressor contactor connected tot eh fan terminals.
Did you test the defrost stat?

It was wired correctly. It seems that the defrost thermostat is bad. I unplugged the defrost thermostat from the board and the system works like it should. I will replace the thermostat and go from there.

So you didn't do the test like I said in post 7, before you went out an bought a defrost board.

Oh well. They're cheap.
