Payne gas furnace- GAS HEATING LOCKOUT

I have a Payne PG8UAA036065 gas furnace. For the past three years I have had issues with my furnace getting a code 21, which is:

GAS HEATING LOCKOUT - Control will NOT auto reset. Check for: - Mis-wired gas valve or Defective control(valve Relay)

The issue is intermittent, It may run for one cycle or ten before it locks up. Once it locks up I can flip the break off and back on and it will run until it happens again. I called a technician to come take a look but we could not recreate the issue while he was there. He cleaned and inspected all the usual parts. He said the only other thing he could do was replace the control board and hope that fixes the issue. Does this sound like something that would be caused by a faulty control board?

Absolutely it could be a failing control board. Remove the board and check for hot spots on the back side.

That code means the board is sensing a flame after the thermostat shuts off which would indicate the gas valve is stuck open or energized. if that happened the furnace would overheat and you would get a burning smell or a very hot house. more than likely the board is faulty and giving you a false code as there is a 1 in a million chance the valve is sticking open.
