outside unit of heatpump keeps running

Forgive the dummy here. The inside blower unit turns off at the appointed temp but the outside unit continues to run making a labored noise. I suspect a relay is stuck. When I tap the outsde unit with my fist it turns off. Is this a switch or relay problem? If so where would I find it and is this a DIY repair? Thanks , Bill

**Always kill the power ** Hot air rises, but heat will always move from higher to lower temperatures. ** Real man shoot in manual. ** If it ain't grounded, it ain't dead.
