outside instalation?

hi guys, i just bought a house with a big old decrepit natural gas furnace/ac unit mounted on a pad completely outside. i'm not familiar with this type of setup, or even what it's called

i think i'd like to replace it with newer, more efficient equipment, but i don't no what I'm looking for.

i'm guessing an outside install like this is not vary efficient?

thanks!

Package units have fairly high efficiency ratings.
Depending if its a electric/gas, or electric/electric unit.

For example:http://www.lennox.com/products/packaged-units/
They also make these with heat pumps.

Ah, that's what it's called "a packaged unit"!

mine is natural gas furnace/electric AC i believe. the house is 1500 sq.ft.
what would be a good brand/model btu/ton to be looking for?

i realize btu/ton is subjective.

Don't worry about brand. Worry about the contractor. How well he will provide service after the sell.

Load calc to determine what size. You can do your own, its well worht the 49 dollar fee. HVAC Calc
