Open studs and insulation in duct behind honeywell humidfier filter

When i removed my filter for my Honeywell whole house furnace humidifier i noticed a square cut inside the top of the duct where I could see ceiling joists and insulation...Is this normal? I thought all ducts should be sealed (air tight)
Should i seal it?
