open high limit device

Trane xe80
Randomly, when we turn up the thermostat for heat we hear a huming, buzing sound like a transformer makes. It is accompanined by a burning smell thoughout the house and the heat may or may not kick on. When it happens the red led flashes 4 times indicating "Open high limit device" according to code diagram on the door. We have two returns, one with a slot for filter another without a slot. Filter is clean. This has been going on for about a week. I was told a transformer either works or does not work.

Most likly the capasitor is shot on the blower motor. Is there air coming out of the vents?
An over heat would tell me there's no air flow so all the heat stays in the combustion chamber that's why you small something burning.

Like joe said........most likely the blower is not comming on, you either have a blown cap or a bad blower motor. There is a chance that the blower relay on the main board is bad as well.

Normally you hear the blower motor start and warm air comes out of the vents. When the humming/buzzing sound with a burning smell happens sometimes the blower motor starts and warm air comes out of the vents and at other times it doesn't and we must turn off the switch on the side of the furnace.

A motor only needs to have difficulty in starting up for a minute to bring about a burning smell and a limit.
Both motors, transformer and gas valve can make a buzzing sound. The transformer and gas valve are an unlikely cause for a high limit. The inducer motor difficulty would give a different code.

That just leaves the fan motor/capaciter or fan relay as the most likely suspect.

I will try and look at those two parts, fan motor/capaciter or fan relay. We have looked for a Trane manual for the xe80 but have had no luck. Happen to know where to get one on line?

good luck on finding the manual. I have found that the mfg's dont give them out and that some installers take them when the put the machine into service. At least they did on my installation (i didnt know to ask for it) and some of the neighbors have had the same thing happen!!!
