Open chimney

So I was looking for a chase from the basement to the attic when i removed some ceiling tiles in the kitchen around where the wall is framed out around the chimney. I was astounded to find a huge opening in my chimney right into the kitchen ceiling! The chimney has no liner. I don't know how this hasn't caused problems before but I've been here 15 yrs. Can I just plug this hole with mesh and some cement or is there a better solution?

That should work. Probably had a wood burning stove connected there many moons ago.

It would be a good idea to have a new lining system installed!! the chimney works as a negative pressure system meaning it will suck air from inside the house unless there is a blockage , or a wind related down draft them it will spill carbon monoxide into your home. Who knows what the rest of the flue looks like don't take a chance, have it re-lined!!

I just installed a new purefire boiler with direct vent. So the chimney is out of use. I was just baffled that I had no problems from it. I've lived here 15 yrs and have co detecters in the house that never registered anything.
