Old Moncrief furnace, flames coming from front of burner

I have an old Moncrief furnace that stopped working properly. When i went down stairs, I could smell gas. I opened the furnace door and there was a flame coming from the front of the burner where it has an adjustable round plate that turns on threads. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

Check the heat exchanger to see if its cracked or burnt through.
Check the chimney to see if its retricted, or clogged.

Might be quicker to have it checked by a tech.
