Old Kitchen Brick Exhaust
 

Hello All,

I have a 90yr old 2-story home with an old brick exhaust that currently has a 6inch "flex" pipe inside that is venting the furnace from the basement.

I need to vent my kitchen rangehood through the same exhaust...and would like to know if i can tie into the existing "flex". My concerns would be losing the bottom of the flex when i cut into it, tight working space, fire safety (grease into same furnace vent), & pipe size for 500cfm hood.

I have been told by plumbers that range exhaust can go down to 3inches...if this is true, I could probably cut a hole into the side of flex and seal it somehow. Is this possible & safe?

It's defiantly possible and pretty easy to do.
Unfortunately it's also dangerous and violates every plumbing code.

Can you elaborate? What are the precations, etc...

I see no way that a range hood and furnace vent should share the same piping. You could get back-drafting of carbon monoxide from the furnance into the home via the range hood line and kill everyone.
Can you punch a vent line from the range out the sidewall?

If you are just wanting to share the same chase, that would be okay, but to tie both together is inviting a CO disaster into your life.
