Old Insulation and Duct Work

I want to have a good load calculation for a Northern VA house. This house is built in 1965. So, what is a good estimate for the norm's wall insulation value during that period in Northern VA?

Another question is I read, see picture about a plenum. Sometimes, it seems people refer to it somehow similar to a main trunk. From book description, it looks like just a short box from the furnace connecting to a trunk. The question is what exactly is it? Why it's needed? Why can't the main truck be connected directly to the furnace?

Depends on the construction methods - stone, brick, 2x4, 2x6, etc, and what the builder may or may not have put in the walls for insulation. You can pull off a wall switch or socket to see if there's any insulation in there - if there is any, then it's probably about R11.
