Question

Is it ok to paint the outside of a furnace?

My furnace is in a large open basement. I'm not interested in closing it off but it looks a touch industrial for my tastes. Any safety concerns with painting it and the ductwork? I can't see why I couldn't paint but as I've never seen anyone else do it I'm wondering if there might be a safety factor at play. Do I need to use a high heat paint or will any paint good for metal work?
