Is oil smell normal when furnace ignites?

I had my cellar door open while I was upstairs on the main floor of my home and when the furnace kicked on, I smelled oil. Is this normal? I have not had my furnace serviced yet because I am on a very low budget and can't afford it yet.

your oil furnace needs to be serviced/cleaned. Why wait till it breaks down completly in the cold.

Most of the time something is wrong when you smell oil, but on some older burners without oil solenoid valves, pre-purge and post purge you'll sometimes get a slight oil smell on start-up due to nozzle after-drip at the end of the previous cycle, especially when you have have delayed ignition, restriction through the heat exchanger or poor draft.

Yes, it is an older burner. Thanks, that is probably what it is. It does not smell of oil every time it ignites, just once in a while.
