Oil-fired Boiler won't start

That's not bad for a Sunday call. Monday might have been $100 cheaper but sometimes it's worth the extra to have heat now and not miss work tomorrow.

Oil-fired Boiler won't start

Oh I see what he did! Some companys have set charges for service items! Mine did not.. they did stick hourly and parts. no travel time charge for regular hours! So in short he was pretty well in line. That controler is more expensive also. he new models are.... id have to look it up ut some are all electronic and diagnostic ports and on and on..... I am guessing that with the company I used to work for, the charge would have been pretty similar if not more!!! So I wouldnt rock the boat yet.

Yes You are right Marty S! I was telling him that most companys will be that much or more.... My company would charge $85 hour nite or weekend which includes travel and diagnostic and repair times and the part, tax shop supplies..... So I would say got good deal and let it go!

Oil-fired Boiler won't start

OK, thanks for the feedback everyone. Now that I am becoming more handy around the house (only owned for 2.5 years), I guess it gets frustrating paying hundreds of dollars for something like this. I guess the next thing I need to learn about is boilers!

Oil-fired Boiler won't start

So I came home from work yesterday, about a week and a half after the control box failed, and my boiler was cold. I pressed the reset button once, and it has been running for about 18 hours since.

Is this something I should be concerned with? What could have caused the safety shutoff to kick? I am worried that I am going away for a few days and I don't want it to kick off again and have my pipes burst.

I would be concerned with it. Intermittent problems only get more frequent and worse. When was the last time the burner was properly serviced by a qualified oil burner tech? There are a dozen different reasons a oil burner won't start. Dirty/bad nozzle or electrodes, weak ignition transformer, bad or dirty cad cell etc etc.

I have it serviced every summer by an oil burner tech. This past summer was the third. Over the past 3 years, I've had replaced the transformer, control box and combustion chamber. Hopefully whatever is causing this isn't more serious.

I find it funny this happening 2 weeks after the control box went out on me. Maybe just a coincedence.

Need to have the cad cell rested. It could be weak. And its alignment should be checked also.

Does it tend to fail more often when its real cold out. Or does it fail when its mild out also.
Ignition transformers can test good when their cold. But get weak as they warm up. And will tend to fail to be able to jump the ignitor gap when its colder out. So if he just tested teh transformer for spark gap, he could have missed a weak transformer.
I like to test them for 15 minutes of constant spark.

Well so far it failed once 2 weeks ago...resolved by changing out the control box.

Then it failed Thursday...resolved by just pressing the reset button on the new control box. It's been running for over 24 hours since then.

I will post the next time it fails....so hopefully you don't hear from me again

Thanks for the advice.
