Oil-fired Boiler won't start

Woke up this morning with no heat. I have a call into my service company, but is there anything I can do myself to help diagnose the problem?

I have done plenty of work around my house in plumbing and electrical, never tried to tackle a boiler issue before. Suggestions of things I can look at? The only thing I've done so far is press the red reset button, and check the breaker to see if it tripped, which it had not.

It's a Weil-McLain boiler from 1994.

Did it try to start when you pressed the red button? ONLY press it ONCE!!. Is there 120 volts to the boiler, someone shut off the power switch on the ceiling/stairs or faulty switch?

What did it do when you reset it? Did it start at all? Need some more info.

Nothing at all when I reset it (pressed the red button)...didn't start at all. I did try pressing it 2 or 3 times, I won't anymore. All the power is on that I can tell....no switch or breaker is off.

Thermostat, control transformer, low water cut off (if used) stuck or faulty limit switch, bad relay are a few of my guesses.

Find the main switch (looks like a light switch). They can fail from old age, even when not used. May be original 40-50 yr old switch if the house is that old. You would need to have a voltage tester to see if power is getting to the boiler or get a Pro to do it.

I am not sure if it's getting 120, but my non-contact volt sensor is beeping, so I think it is.

My multimeter broke, so I can't test the actual voltage. I do not think it's an electrical problem (no other electrical problems in the house curreently).

The main switch on my boiler is right next to the boiler, not at the top of the stairs. It is a metal switch, doesn't look like a light switch. But I do have power on both sides of it, according to my tester, so I do believe the boiler is getting power.

Now those don't SOUND like expensive parts...hopefully not! I believe I got the transformer replaced two years ago. Whatever the part is that creates the spark...that's what I had replaced a few years ago.

Post some pics of the burner and control. You should be getting 24 volts from R to C on the control and transformer. Hop over to HDepot and pick up a meter B4 the tech arrives. We can walk/talk you thru this with some pics.

Man, I really could use that multimeter...I actually just ordered a fluke meter not too long ago, but it hasn't come yet. Shoulda used faster delivery

I'll take some pics now.

Thanks so much for all the help.

Even a cheap small $25 meter would be worth a quick trip to get. Can never have too many meters/tools.

Yuri - did you just give me an excuse to buy a new tool?

Sorry about the blurry pics, the bottom pic is the switch I was talking about. But my non-contact meter is giving me voltage on both sides. How much, I don't know. I will eat breakfast then head out for a multimeter.

Try jumper the thermostat wires upstairs AFTER removing them from the tstat. It may be faulty.
