Oil Burner Will Not Start

My oil burner will not start when the room is at or below the temperature specified by the thermostat. If I go to the burner and tap the relay, the burner starts and will run until the house reaches the specified temperature on the thermostat.

In certain cases, the burner will come on when it is supposed to, however, this is not all the time and with the weather becoming colder, this is a problem.

Does this sound like an issue with the relay? I currently have a Honeywell R8184G4009 relay installed on the burner, however, it seems to be old (installed before I purchased the home.

Thanks for any advice!

Sounds like it is sticking and that is NOT safe as it could stick ON as well. Not sure what cross references to that relay but a local HVAC supplier should be able to find out. I would not trust some unknown on EZ Bay for it.

Oil Burner Will Not Start

Speaking to an experienced HVAC technician, he said that it is, many times, the controller. I have experimented many times with setting different temperatures on the thermostat, and every time I set the thermometer to less than the current room temperature, it shuts off immediately. Whenever I set the set point to a higher than current room temperature value, it will not start. As I mentioned, if I tap the controller, it starts. It consistently does this every time.

Has anyone seen this before?

When I typed thermometer, I meant thermostat.
