od fan not shut off in defrost mode

Got a carrier heat pump that I noticed the outside fan was not shutting off in defrost mode. I pulled the wire from the fan relay and it shut off. Since the relay is on the defrost board, wouldn't that mean the board is bad?

Thinking out loud, cant I wire a relay after the one on the board, and tie the coil to the reversing valve(orange wire)? That way when the reversing valve switched into defrost mode the NC contacts of the relay would open and shut the fan off. I just don't want to spent 100 bucks on a board if mine is not bad, but I cant think of any thing else it could be, but a bad board.

What's the plan for cooling

Yep, that would tend to eliminate his A/C.

He could use an outdoor thermostat in conjunction with the relay. So that the relay would only open if it was below X degrees outside.

Could be a stuck relay. Have you tried tapping on it? If the relay is stuck then you could just bypass it and solder in a new one. You need a 24v AC relay.
