Noisy Heat Pump

A year and a half ago, with heating oil prices approaching $4.00 per gallon, I got rid of my 33 year old oil heater and 20 year old air conditioning system and replaced them with a high efficiency heat pump.

The heat pump itself works well. The problem is with the air handler. The first and second heat stage are relatively quiet. However the auxillary stage which kicks in when it is really cold out litterally sounds like a jet engine. It will wake you up out of a sound sleep (which is why I'm typing this at 2:00 AM).

The installer said that the existing duct work is too small to handle the volume of air generated in the auxillary mode. He also said that there was no way to program it out through the thermostat. Short of upsizing the duct work, is there anything that can be done to quiet the air handler when in the auxillary mode? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The "emergency" heat is two electric coils. One is 5KW and on is 10KW. But I thought that was different than "auxillary" heat. I thought that auxillary was just the highest setting the heat pump itself would give you but I certainly could be wrong. Just the way is was explained to me.

Your installer probably just has it set up wrong. Blower speed/CFM for aux heat is adjustable for most units.

Post brand and model number of the outdoor and indoor unit.

Odds are if the duct is too small for the electric then it's also too small for the heat pump.

Can't see the model number on the outside unit. Its a Lennox Signature Series. I believe it has a 17.2 SEER rating. The air handler model number is CBX32mv-048-230-6-03.

In the summer. When its in cooling mode. Is it too loud.

If not. Then your contractor has the aux heat air flow setting set wrong.

In the air conditioning mode it is not noisy at all. You can hardly hear it running.

Aux heat speed is incorrectly set.

If you have the installers manual. You should be able to see what dip switch settings to change.

Set it to the same speed as your cooling speed.

I have the installers manuel. Not sure I'm savy enough to use it, though. Thanks for your help.

Look in the section on blower speeds. Should have a listing for aux, or heating speed. Might want to read and then reread it.
