Are they all the same or is there a specific type I need to go with this old unit? Lastly, how do I wire said controller? Does it just have 2 connections (one for the yellow fan wire and one for the black wire off the heat sensor?) or is my wiring rigged beyond just 2 wires being in the wrong spot?

All this is seriously a big help. I can't believe the serviceman would leave the heater like this. But it was a few years ago now and we never noticed until like 9months after he left. You think the wiring looks bad now...shoulda seen it before he worked on it!

Cracks in heat exchanger - this would have to do with leaking burnt fuel/CO into the "clean" air right? I'm sure it can happen but I don't think ours has a crack.

ok, so after watching these videos and checking the parts catalog it looks like everything for heat is supposed to be linked to the limit controller as it will turn on/off the gas as well as the fan. well i definitely have the controller and it's obviously doing something since it it turning on/off the gas, but not the fan. I don't see a way of knowing whether or not it works properly unless ALL the wiring is correct on it first, which it obviously isn't since there's a wire not connected to anything.

thanks for the videos though, they both helped understand what the controller does, but don't help me get it wired properly since those are both different than mine. i'm wondering where I can find the proper wiring for this so I can reconnect the disconnected wires and either make it work or get it all correct before I start diagnosing broken parts that aren't fully installed. I tried google searching the model number for a wiring diagram but came up empty handed. can't read it in the pics, but here's the model: 21LU 080A 2M1

side question: is the fan's on/off controller for the A/C function different than that for the heat or are they separate contollers? because that seems to work just fine.

So...anyone with wiring tips for me? Do I need to make a diagram of whats going on in that spaghetti and list where each wire currently goes?
