Newbie stumped by simple thermostat

I have a basic, very old floor unit that was not working...I changed out the gas valve and things seemed to be okay with one exception... The thermostat was not working. I replace it with simple heat only circular one and it still does not work ... It's only r and w ... When I remove thermo and tie them together, the gas valve triggers!!!! What's going on here with not getting the thermostat to work(ps, I made sure the switches were set proper too)

Thanks for any advice

Probably has a millivolt burner/works off less than 1 volt thru a powerpile self generator. Too much resistance in the heat anticipator of the thermostat. A GOOD quality Honeywell Focus Pro tstat may work with your unit as it is an electronic type with good quality low resistance switches and no heat anticipator. An el cheapo won't work well. Get it at HDepot.

If still wanting the basic type thermostat, either electronic, or manual, look on the packaging, and it will state what type of systems it will work with (mili-volt, 24v, etc).
