New thermostat wiring question

Hello. I have an Amana HVAC system I purchased 2 years ago. I purchased a new thermostat that requires the blue 24v common wire.

When I hooked it up, it does not power on. The control panel in the HVAC system (a Goodman PCBBF106S) has each color wire correctly wired up.

However, the technicians that installed the unit splicedthe blue wire from the panel to the outside blue wire, but the blue wire going to the thermostat is spliced into the orange wire going outside.

Can anyone tell me how to wire this up so I can use the new thermostat, and what the outside orange wire is for? I could not find anything on google, maybe I am searching wrong.

Thank you very much for your help

The name of Tstat would help with your question.

New thermostat wiring question

The thermostat is a Trane TZEMT043AB32MAA

The manual with wiring diagram is here: http://www.smarthomeusa.com/Products...B32MAAInst.pdf

It needs the C wire as well as R to power on. Unlike a normal thermostat, it won't even turn on with just the R wire.

The C wire from the control panel on the indoor unit goes to the C wire on the heat pump, but NOT to the thermostat; The thermostat C wire goes to the O heat pump wire and the YLO line on the indoor unit. The indoor unit control panel is a Goodman PCBBF106S.

If I hook the new thermostat directly to the indoor unit control panel, it powers on, and can cycle the fan and the heater, but not the condensing unit or it's outdoor fan (I guess no suprise because it's not wired up ).

I need to know how to wire in this O to YLO wire to the new thermostat.

Thank you for helping me.

Post the model number of the indoor unit, not just the control board. Also post the model number of the outdoor unit.

I think your going to have to pull a new thermostat wire.

New thermostat wiring question

OK I did more research, and called the original company that installed our system and they wont help me unless I pay a minimum service fee of $99 to come out because they say an orange wire is only used in heat pump reversing valves. I don't have a heat pump (they wired this up, but refuse to believe it's wired this way).

I have checked the actual units and my receipts, I have an Amana ASX18361AB 18 SEER 3 ton 35,000BTU/h condenser unit outside, and an Amana AMV90905DXBB 90% AFUE 90,000MBTU/h 2-stage variable speed Low NOx 5,000CFM central furnace inside.

There are 4 low voltage wires going outside:

Inside-Outside
White-White
Blue-Blue
Green-Green
YLO-Orange

Note the inside panel "YLO" terminal is actually purple colored and marked "YLO", and is not the yellow colored "Y" terminal.

The wires going to the thermostat I can hook up myself, but the outside Orange wire, which goes to the inside panel's YLO terminal was wired to the thermostat blue, or common. I NEED this blue/common wire for the thermostat and is my whole problem.

I'd run new wire to the stat, and to the outdoor unit. And wire eveything the same color inside and out.

They probably just used what ever wire they had.

Wire colors DO NOT MATTER in the grand scheme of thermostat wiring. IT DOES MATTER what function each wire does.

If you are calling anyone up and asking "about the orange color" there is no way they can know what that wire controls. YES, it is TYPICALLY used for the reversing valve, but you don't have one.

New thermostat wiring question

OK thank you technow. I guess I need to open up the outside unit and see what the orange wire connects to then?

It is hooked to "YLO" however on the inside unit, and has been working fine. So I am guessing that is right, but I cannot find online what YLO is for... does anyone here know by chance?

First stage cooling. It runs the blower at a lower speed then Y2 does.
