New To Hot Water Home Heating System

Hi everyone,
I'm happy to have found you all.
My wife and I have found the perfect place to live. Trouble is, the house is 44 yrs old. Not quite as "up to date" as I would like it but it's nice just the same. I am now faced with understanding a hot water baseboard heating system. I turned it on for the first time in my experience and by all appearances I should have probably started the system in August to get warm by today.
Can anyone give me the basics on the system and how it is intended to function? Are there any little things I should do before/during/after operating the system? How do I know it's working properly? What are the basic attributes of this kind of home heating?
I have a Weil-McLain system and photos are available if required.

get the water as hot as possible and bleed the air out of all the radiators, air in the loop is one of the main problems with your system. the water pressure gauge most read near 12psi with a cold boiler and make sure the little pump is lubricated and running, 99 out of 100 air is the problem.

Check that the water supply/make-up water valve is on and not plugged. If the system runs out of water and does not shut itself down then the unit will overheat and get destroyed.

Have the burners been cleaned?


Does this unit have a standing pilot light or electronic ignition?

Do you know how old the system is?
