Here's my situation;
We have been living in our newly constructed home of 2600 square feet for roughly 3 months now. Our heat pump is a Goodman 3.5 ton. We live in Montreal, Canada, where we have true 4 seasons. Temperatures in winter can get to -40F with windchill, and extremely humid +100F weather in Summer. During the winter, we had no trouble with heating the house, no matter what temperature we'd set the thermostat. The system would match it. However, over the weekend, we have had a very hot couple of days where the temperature was hitting about 80 or 85. I set my thermostat to about 72 or so, but there didn't appear to be any difference the the temperature of the air that was coming out of the vents. The thermostat's temperature didn't decrease either. I left it on all night in cooling mode, but when I woke up in the morning, the temperature didn't change. I can see the heat pump from the window, and I see the fan spinning intermittently and can hear the motor running. It's my first heat pump, so I'm not sure if I'm doing anything wrong, or how it works exactly. From the research that I've done, I understand that a heat pump will not necessarily reduce the temperature below 70 or so, and there are many factors behind why, but I do expect to feel cold air coming through the vents. That morning, I got up and turned my thermostat to the "off" position, but left the blower on (I always leave it on for circulation). In the "Off" position, the air coming out of the vents didn't get any warmer, it was the same as in the "cool" position. I also checked the heat pump, and I still see it spinning slowly intermittently, and can hear it as well. From my understanding, if I set the thermostat to the "off" position, shouldn't it turn off the heat pump completely? Or maybe I'm just not understanding how this system works. I thought I would check with some of the experts here, before I contact the builder and have them come take a look at the system. Any help would be appreciated.
