Question

New Condenser Fan Motor Smoking???

Fan Motor locked up last night, nothing done could get it to stay running.

So we found a DIY HVAC supply today, got a new fan motor, got instructions how to wire it, did as told (brown and brown to cap / white, red, black to line)

Almost POSITIVE that its wired correctly, BUT it keeps smoking out the little screw holes where it gets screwed into the lid. WHY? Is there possible a reasonable explanation for this? Or is it wired wrong? Help!

Something else is causing this to happen. Or the motor is not the proper one. What are spec's on the plate for the old motor, same for the new one.

Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?

New Condenser Fan Motor Smoking???

The motor is wired wrong. Brown wires to run cap. black and white to line for high speed,or red and white to line for low speed.

It sounds like you have a multi-speed motor... You cannot have both red and black wired in...its either going to be red and white, or black and white. If you have both red and black wired in your going to burn out your motor. The red wire is for one speed and the black wire is for another speed... Figure out which one you need.

Its a rescue or other such universal motor. Black used with 1 of 2 different caps is X and Y HP, Red used with 1 of 2 different caps is 2 other possible horse powers. The white is the common wire.

I carry those type of universal motors on my truck.

Using them allows you to go from carrying 9 or more motors, to just 4 or 5, and covering a majority of what you run into.

You might want to look into them.
