I have a two story 1300 sq ft duplex. The 2.5 ton central A/C has a heat pump and eats about 3 kwH of electricity when it is heating.
It takes 1 hr 7 min for it to heat the air temperature 2 degrees F and 39 min for the temperature to drop 2 degrees.
Does this sound normal?
The temperature outside is in the low 30s and inside the thermostat is set to 71 F.
Do you think I need a more powerful A/C or should I improve the insulation? I feel slight cold air coming in on the sides of the two exterior doors (front and back). I will try to add more door seal material along the sides but they may only make a small difference. The doors themselves are cheaply made (thin hollow type). I'm thinking I could invest in a thicker door or double door. The windows are okay; double pane but installed in 1983 so not the best quality.
The attic is always a big leak. Seal penetrations from wires, pipes, and the hatch. To keep the top floor cool in the summer, put in a radiant heat barrier. Finally, blow in a thick layer of insulation above your existing insulation.
