New Am Stan unit and aux heat?

I had a new 3 ton 13 seer American Standard one piece heat pump installed in a vacation cabin.
When not there we set the heat to 60 and then when we arrive we bump it up slowly 2 - 4 degrees at a time to get the temp up to 67.
We do it slow so the unit would not go into aux heat and pull more power....but I noticed with the new unit when the temp was increased by 2 degrees it goes into aux heat.
I called the contractor and he said it was normal........does this sound correct?

Yes it is normal. You would be better off letting the auxillary kick in and help heat up the cabin faster. If it bothers you, you can have the contractor install a lockout thermostat that will keep the heat strips from coming on above a certain outdoor temp.

As above, have a lock out stat or switch installed, or install one yourself.

If interested, Goodman sells a value line thermostat that has a switch behind the front cover for shutting off the auxillary heat. I installed a couple of them here a few years back, seem to be holding up well.
