I have 5 1000 watt ceramic panel heaters in a sun room, and would like to replace the current thermostat with a programmable model. 5000 watts / 240v = 21 amps. (As a side note, it appears as if the contractor who installed the system used an undersized thermostat because the wires at the connection show signs of overheating.) There are 2 10g wires that supply the power in conduit, and there is a box that houses the current thermostat.
I'm having difficulty finding a line-load thermostat that can handle this much current -- most that I have found tops out at 3800 watts/16 amps.
One potential alternative I'm considering is to replace the line-load stat with a 240v DPST relay and a conventional 24v programmable stat. If you think this would be a better alternative, I need recommendations for the combo relay/transformer. Thanks.
