Question

Need to make slight change to duct layout (pic)

Due to obstacles and what not in the attic space I want to make a minor change to my duct layout. The Air Handler (AHU) needs to rotate 90 degrees counter clockwise. In order to accommodate this I would like to change the wye to a 14x14x14 reducing the one branch to a 8" that goes to another 8x6x6 wye to feed the two ducts. On the other 14" branch I want to run it to a 14x10x10, reduce the one branch to a 8" and finish the duct as originally designed. The other branch would also continue as originally designed. I believe this will retain the original CFMs

On the return side, this layout becomes greatly simplified with 1 12" branch off or the plenum to a 12x10x10 tee. Reduced to 8" to pick up the one return, and staying at 10" to pick up the original design.

I have overlaid the original drawing in red, sorry for the wiggly lines. Please ask any questions for additional information. The original designer is currently unavailable, and this project needs to move forward, thanks.

Is this a FYI post or do you have specific concerns or questions?

Why do you have 3-4 separate return air grills?

Andy.

This was to illustrate my changes, and see if they were acceptable.

I don't have an anwser as the the number of return grates. It was my understanding, that for the most part I needed one per room. And that I had to ensure that I had enough return air feeding the system. This design was given to me by an HVAC designer.

The usual method for return air in a Single Family Residence (SFR) is to have only one return air register, usually centrally located. The doors to the rooms that are conditioned are under-cut by about an inch for the conditioned air to return.
I am not saying that the guy is wrong, it is just unusual to see this in a home though.

Andy.

OK, so I have one large return high on the greatroom wall. Ar eyou saying this would be sufficient for the entire system?

Also, i am guessing you are ok with my proposed layout changes?

Note, that the drawing doesn't lay out exactly in the atttic, because of obstacles and actual distances, much of the pipeing is simplified, all though we are keeping the reductions as reccomended.

Depends on where you are from I guess. We install multiple return airs all the time. Its better to have them in my opinion.

Southwest PA. Live in the mountains, actually in the woods, so A/C won't be "needed" but a couple weeks a year.
