Need info on flex duct

My heating ducts are going to be my next project and I'm trying to get some info on flex duct. Currently I have metal ducts but hardly any of it is usable. Half of it is disconnected and what actually looks mostly connected isn't sealed or attached properly and I'm losing half my air into my crawlspace. I've been thinking of replacing my duct with flex duct since it's so easy but I've read a lot of stuff on the internet bashing it. How good is the stuff if properly installed (routed properly, fully extended)?

All things being equal, I think insulated metal duct is far better. But if it's installed correctly (see above), flex duct good for branch lines - it's quieter than metal duct between the main trunk and the registers.
