need advice - filter size doesn't match air handler spec
hi,
i have in the attic a Trane air handler several years old. what's weird is that it says 20X20X1 for the filter. but every 3 to 6 months i have to squeeze in a 20X20X1 filter very very hard and sometimes even damage the pleated filter. the length is OK but it's too wide. i took measurements of the pleated filter and it's actually a little smaller than 20 inches already. is 19X20X1 possible to find? or is there something i could do to make it easier to force in a 20X20X1? is this normal or is there something wrong with Trane air handler? Thank you. borrowed a picture from internet and added the numbers to show the width is giving me the trouble. Last edited by diybeginner123; 03-28-2012 at 04:39 PM. Reason: picture added |

Remove filter, an measure what size the bracket is. may be able to use an 18X20X1.

If beenthere's suggestion doesn't work...
In my neck of the woods we have air filter manufactures that seem content to make up small lots (10) of what ever sized filter you want. For a 1" width filter in your dimmensions with a pleated paper medium it's only $8.00 each. Might be worth a local phone book check to see. |

Cut the filter down and staple end back on

On that airhandler, Check to make sure there are no screws holding that return plenum on that extend into the filter rack.....or change to filter grille's.

thank you all! i finally went back to the attic to take measurements and it's 19 3/4. so 18X20X1 is too small. but i'll try to find 19 1/2 X 19 1/2 X 1. i can't find it in local home depot though. i forgot to check what Technow suggested and will do so next time when i'm up there.
