Need Advice on blower for furnace

I'm new to this site and have been desperately searching for any way to fix the blower in my furance myself since I really cannot afford to have a professional do it. All summer my central air worked but then it started making a squealing noise whenever it would come on so I stopped using it. When winter came I turned my furnace on and it worked fine for about a month but then that too started squealing so I tried to leave it off unless absolutely necessary for it to be on. Then I woke up one morning and smelt smoke like plastic burning so I turned it off and had my grandfather come over and look at it, all he could suggest was replacing the air filter, I did that and the blower started working again, but then the next day once again started filling the house up with smoke. I've gone most of the winter without heat now with temps in the negatives I'm desperate. The furnace will turn on and produce heat but the blower doesn't blow, it just smells like burning plastic and fills the house up with smoke, any suggestions or advice would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

This need to move to the HVAC section. If you can supply model numbers and a photo you'll get some fast help from good folks

you might have a multispeed motor, and for now you can flip to another speed...if you try to free spin the squirrel cage the motor turns and it is stiff or brakes real fast after a spin the bearings might be tight.see it(motor)can take oil.is the motor or fan section dust covered on the motor housing?changing the speed wire is no big deal shut the unit down and tell us what you have when pop the bottom panel for the fan access.did you try to run the fan from the stat with FAN -ON? that is the high speed for the ac side of your cooling in the summer.if that works with no smell your lo speed on the motor is shot which is you heatying fan speed.might beable to flip to medium/med.hi or just try that FAN/ON from the stat and set the heat as normal.

Biggles, he already said it was squealing in ac, so changing speeds won't help the poor guy.
