My pilot tries to light light but burners don't come on

I have a whirlpool intermittent gas furnace. The pilot tries to light but then the burners do not come on. I thought maybe the flame sensor was dirty so I cleaned It, that did not work. next step I live in a 2 family house both furnaces are exactly the same so I swapped out the flame sensor and that didn't work either It's still doing the same thing. I don't have the extra money right now to call a tech out here, and It's cold does anyone know what the problem might be? model # is nuge080kg01 serial # h725 65907. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Post a pic of the burner area with the front cover off. How old is it? May have a date code # on the gas valve ie:8516 = 1985 16th week nug is a ICP product I believe.

It's a spark ignition. It clicks the flames comes on to light the burners then it goes backs out It tries to to do this several times but the burners wont light.

I do not have a digital camera to take a picture of the burners. I'm not sure how old it is, but it seems to be well maintained. I have only lived here a short time.

When you swapped the "flame sensor" what did it look like. Pilot assembly with thick red wire to a S86 control? The age is important as it helps us determine the control system. Without a pic it is hard to know what you have there. Borow a camera from a friend.

I'am trying to understand what you are saying.. The sparker lights the pilot , the pilot burns against flame sensor.. Once flame sensor detects or recognizes flame then the gas valve opens... If it works this way ..After the pilot lights. does it continue to spark even thought the pilot is lit ???.. It could be dirty pilot , not making good flame contact with flame sensor,, bad flame sensor,,Loss of ground, control box

I would check for power at the g.v. after the pilot is lit... The g.v should get a signal from the control module to open if it recieves a signal from the flame sensor( provided all limits are closed.)....This is where a V.M.( volt meter) comes in handy

Furnace is plus 20 years. Uses the old johnson controls spark module.

You said the pilot "tries to light" so it I think you mean it is not lighting at all. More than likely the module is not making the pilot valve to establish pilot flame. This is the most common failure this furnace experiences. Other alternative failures could be a plugged pilot orifice, weak pilot spark, od the gas valve.

A lost ground would cause interrupted burner operation. It would still run but only intermittently.
