Is my new variable speed air handler working correctly?

Hey, guys.

Got an Amana 3-ton variable speed split system installed for the upstairs of the house last week. Fired it up for the first time on Saturday night.

With the fan set to "on", I get a nice slow air movement. But as soon as heat is called for, it's like a wind tunnel hits. The way I expected the variable fan to work is that it would use less blower speed when only a degree or 2 are called for. I expected that this would require some additional wiring to the thermostat. The installer sold me on getting a Nest thermostat. It is wired for "heat pump - heat" and "heat pump - cool". I can get the exact wiring for you if it would help. I don't believe he ran new thermostat wire so he likely only used the leads that the old system's wire made available.

So.. what's the deal? A forum search leads me to the ComfortNet thermostats, but that cant' be the only way to get the variable fan speed to act smarter, can it? I don't need to control the speed directly, I just want it to be smart about when it uses differing speeds. Can I use the dip switches I see mentioned?

Thanks!

Nest stat can't control the fan speed. Good chance the installer didn't set up the blower right. However it will still ramp up fairly fast when ever there is a heat or cooling call.

The wires hooked up are:

Y1, G, O/B, RC, C

Interesting tid-bit from the Nest support pages:
"Note: By default, Nest controls the fan in the same way for each stage of heat based on what is selected during setup. A Nest Certified Professional, however can configure each stage individually using Pro Setup"
